Austrian Model 1842 "System Laukart" Socket Bayonet

This bayonet was designed to utilize the Laukart System of spring catch attachment to a musket barrel muzzle. Very likely acquired as surplus arms prior to and during the American Civil War, and very likely saw action. These were later converted to use a locking ring and also used in that arrangement. Displayed on the shank is an asterisk or star. Blade is 4-edged or "t" shaped.
These used a leather-covered wood scabbard, sheet-steel mounts (not shown).
