BAYONETS from Janzen's Notebook
(from the Introduction)

This book has several objectives, including the documentation of my collection, presentation of the information I have accumulated and, finally, the compilation of a reasonably complete, inexpensive book for the novice collector, partial collector and bayonet-related collector, this effort is in no way a definitive reference work and, in fact, contains only the information which I feel is of interest to my audience, references are included with each bayonet which, coupled with the detailed bibliography, will allow the serious collector to locate all published data on any given piece or country.

The book is organized by country, with the pieces arranged more or less chronologically by date, and a number of factors are important to keep in mind when using this book.

Book measures roughly ~8-5/8" by ~11-1/4" (portrait); ~1-1/2" thick; over 250 pages.

BAYONETS of the Remington Cartridge Period

BAYONETS
OF THE REMINGTON CARTRIDGE PERIOD
ISBN: 0-9619789-2-9
By Jerry L. Janzen

BAYONETS OF THE REMINGTON CARTRIDGE PERIOD
(from the Introduction)

The history of the bayonets accompanying the cartridge-period Remington arms is "sketchy" at best. This is due in part to the absence of early Remington records which have been lost or destroyed over the years and has influenced the perception of collectors (who rely on published information) as to the importance of the arms. Outside of documentation on the better known Remington bayonets, little attention has been paid to the subject. This effort is a preliminary investigation and the author hopes that it will provide some value (and appreciation of Remington's place in military history) to those who know little about the subject and have perhaps looked at a rusty old Remington bayonet and wondered "where has it been?" This material has also been organized to provide some guidelines and direction for those who wish to study the subject more intensively.

The problem encountered by the historian attempting to look more than a century into the past, is the absence of living sources whose knowledge and memory can aid in the task. The primary oral sources of weapons history currently available are importers and dealers with knowledge of the surplus weapons placed on the market from time to time. Much information in this document has come from such sources.

It is hoped that this effort will transmit some of the fascination to the reader which the author experienced as the Remington cartridge period was explored. It was a period of change for the world, the United States and Remington-" the country's oldest firearms manufacturer." This era also spawned the large export firms and resulted in their subsequent impact on Remington. The bayonets of the period mirror this change and offer a fertile area of inquiry.

Book (green-cover) measures roughly ~8-3/4" by ~11-1/4" (portrait); ~5/8" thick; 186 pages.

AMERICAN SOCKET BAYONETS and SCABBARDS

AMERICAN SOCKET BAYONETS and SCABBARDS
By Robert M. Reilly

ISBN: 0-917218-45-0
Printed in the United States of America.

AMERICAN SOCKET BAYONETS and SCABBARDS
(from the dust-jacket end-flaps)

Having already redefined the field of American martial firearms history with his studies of small arms and flintlocks, celebrated author/artist Robert M. Reilly now turns his attention to socket bayonets, their scabbards and frogs. This comprehensive illustrated text covers all of the interesting and important models and variations, from Colonial times throuh the post-Civil War period. With the growing popularity of socket bayonets among collectors, the need for a standard reference work to expand upon the groundbreaking efforts of the now deceased Albert N. Hardin, Jr. became evident; American Socket Bayonets and Scabbards fills this need and then some. In example after example, author Reilly displays his consumate ability as an artist, engaging style as a writer and exactitude as a researcher. And the fact that both bayonets and scabbards are covered two authoritative studies under one cover - presents a true bargain to the reading public. Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the socket bayonet was considered the basic, primary infantry weapon, and in this century Reilly's American Socket Bayonets and Scabbards is the basic, primary guide to this fascinating, frightening artifact of our military past.

Book measures roughly ~9-1/4" by ~12-3/8" (portrait); ~3/4" thick; 209 pages.

The GERMAN BAYONET, 1871-1945

THE GERMAN BAYONET
A COMPREHENSIVE ILLUSTRATED HISTORY
OF THE REGULATION PATTERNS, 1871-1945

By John Walter

ARMS AND ARMOUR PRESS - London

ISBN: 0-85368-211-9
Printed in the Great Britain.

THE GERMAN BAYONET
(from the dust-jacket end-flaps)

The first comprehensive study of German bayonets to be published in any language. The German Bayonet, 1871-1945, traces the history of the weapons - dwelling on dimensions, markings, accessories and construction from the old Dreyse needle-rifles and percussion muzzle-loaders of the Franco-Prussian war, through the bloody trench warfare of World War One, to the final eclipse and capitulation of the battle-weary German armies in May 1945. Among the weapons described in detail are the brass-hilt sword and sabre bayonets of the pre-Reich state armies, the infamous "Butcher Knife" of World War One (whose back of double saw-teeth was fuel for many an Allied propaganda poster and pamphlet), the highly-advanced Eickhorn-made S 42 tool-bayonet of World War Two, and many more.

Unlike most nations, the Germans used many different bayonets, notably in the period prior to the collapse of the Second Reich in 1918; and many issue weapons are found bearing royal cyphers and the marks of the units in which they were used. This, however, is rarely the case with weapons produced during the period 1914-18, when the regimental armourers and base workshops had more to do than merely stamp unit marks - letter by letter, number by number - into the metal of the weapons' cross-guards!

The German Bayonet, 1871-1945, is illustrated with photographs of weapons in one of Britain's leading collections, complemented by the author's meticulous line drawings. Additional emphasis is placed - in a series of reference appendices - on the unit and makers' marks, the attractive multi-coloured bayonet knots, and the rifles the bayonets fitted.

An attractive and fact-filled book, The German Bayonet, 1871-1945, will be essential reading to all who have an interest in the equipment of the German army, and invaluable to bayonet collectors.

Book measures roughly ~7-3/8" by ~10" (portrait); ~5/8" thick; 128 pages.

JAPANESE BAYONETS
(from the dust-jacket end-flaps)

This book is the first comprehensive study of Japanese bayonets to be published in any language. Japanese Bayonets traces the history of these weapons - covering dimensions, markings, construction and belt frogs. It deals with the early bayonets imported by Japan, through those used in the Sino-Japanese, Russo-Japanese wars, World War II, and the post-war period. This book also summarizes the use and development of the various rifles used by Japan, from the British Enfield musket through the Arisaka rifles to the Type 64 assault rifle now in use.

Among the bayonets covered are the yataghan bladed British P1856 and M1866 French Chassepot bayonets - the bayonets developed by Major Tsuneyoshi Murata - those made for the various Arisaka rifles, including ones seldom encountered, such as the Type 100 paratrooper bayonet and the Type 35 Navy bayonet to late-war emergency bayonets and pole-type bayonets. Bayonets used by the Japanese Self Defense Forces are also covered, up to the current Japanese manufactured Type 64 bayonet.

Japanese Bayonets is illustrated with over 350 photographs and line drawings. Included are the arsenals that made the bayonets and rifles of Japan, along with their markings and those of the subcontractors. The Japanese dating system, characters and the full range of bayonet belt frogs utilized are studied.

An invaluable reference guide, filled with photographs and material never before published, Japanese Bayonets is essential to those having an interest in the armament, equipment and history of the Japanese forces.

With over 350 photographs and line drawings.

Book measures roughly ~8-3/4" by ~11-1/4" (portrait); ~1/2" thick; 152 pages.
