Imperial German Army Officer's Sword
(Heer Mannschaftsabel)

Imperial German Army Officer's Sword (Heer Mannschaftsabel) from about 1890 through WWII. Used by the officers of various branches of service - civilian and military. These sabers were made by a number of well-known German edged weapon manufacturers. This particular example was manufactured by "E und F Horster" of Solingen, Germany. Overall length in scabbard is ~38-1/2".

Hilt is P-guard, single bow type; all metal furniture is nickel-plated; black plastic grip with decorative twisted-brass-wire wrap. Guard has downward facing langets (aka "ears") which extend over the scabbard throat. Hilt length is approximately 5" without langets; ~5-3/4" with. Crossguard is ~4" from bottom 90 degree of P-guard to top quillon finial; P-guard is ~4" from furthest point of P-guard to top of grip backstrap.

Blade is single-edged with a single flute or fuller (blood groove) on both sides; nickel-plated. Blade dimensions are ~3/4" by ~3/16" in cross-section at the ricasso; blade length is ~32-1/4" from hilt to tip.

Scabbards are usually nickel-plated, with free-floating single hanger-ring and attaching loop for a belt frog (aka throg) strap. Scabbard dimensions are: ~33-1/2" in length (throat top to drag bottom) and ~1-1/16" by 7/16" in cross-section at the throat.
