SHORT SWORD
WITH SCABBARD
Unknown manufacturer, unknown origin; possibly Spanish.
No visible stamps or marks.
Very similar to the French Model 1831 Foot Artillery Short Sword based upon the Roman Gladius and the U.S. Model 1832 Artillery Short Sword.
Possibly a fraternal order but my guess would be something like for the Spanish Royal Artillery Academy Cadets or Artillery Musicians.
Overall length - sword in scabbard - is ~26-1/4".
Overall length - sword only - is ~23-1/2".
Hilt is ~5-1/4" in length and is constructed entirely of a white metal, plated - possibly nickel (~30% showing, might clean); cross-guard is ~3-5/8" in width; grip is patterned with feather or fish-scale pattern as with the U.S. Model 1832. One ~1/2" elongated ding in the grip about 1/2" below the pommel.
Double-edged, diamond-cross-section blade is ~18" in length; wide V-shaped blunt tip (see image below); some very minor oxidation is present; very minor surface blemishing, nothing major. Should clean up nicely.
Overall length - scabbard only - is ~20-7/8".
Black leather wrapped around a sheet-steel body with steel throat and drag; ~5/8" button for attaching frog; drag finial depicts the facial features of a man. Minor blemishing to metal and leather surfaces; one ~1/2 plug missing from obverse, lower-section of leather wrap (see image below).
Overall, the sword is in good to very-good condition.
