Belt Knife, N (shield) Y marked, believed Alexander, Sheffield mfg.
$195.00
alexandersheffield001 - !!! SOLD !!!

Great find! Believed to be an Alexander-Sheffield double-edged belt knife with scabbard. Their logo is an "N" and "Y" flanking a US shield or chevron (see images); this logo or trademark is stamped into the center of the guard on both sides. No markings on the blade. This logo was apparently a very clever marketing ploy by this Sheffield maker to capture the attention of American buyers; the "large letters “N Y” separated with a design of an American stars and stripes shield…clearly indicating the state of NEW YORK and obviously designed to capture the fascination of American buyers of the era…most likely Civil War soldiers from that state (and continues to capture the imagination of the modern-day collector to believe that it was an official purchase by the state of New York for its troops!)." - source Flayderman's (flayderman.com).
Alexander of Sheffield was in business from 1850 to 1876, so this knife very likely saw American Civil War usage; worst case, it may have been here during the period of the "Old West."
All belt knives of this period were called "Bowies" to cash in on popularity of the name-sake knife, but this one does not have the distinctive "clipped-point". It is a double-edged spear-point blade with medial fuller on both sides; no ricasso. Dark wood grips, steel cross-guard and "Brazil-nut-looking" pommel. Well blanced.
Scabbard is of black leather body with sheet-rolled steel throat and drag.
Overall length in scabbard is ~14-3/8"; overall length out of scabbard is ~13-3/4"; blade length is ~8-13/16. Blade width at guard is ~1-1/4". Cross-guard is ~2-3/4" wide.
Good condition overall; blade does not appear to have been sharpened (as this is most likely a thrusting weapon) or simply has become dull over time. Nice patina; no evidence of recent sharpening.
I cannot confirm originality of this knife, so sold as is at this price.
