Rare Mexican Contract, Japanese Type 38 Rifle. These were ordered in the 7x57 Mauser cartridge for the Mexican Government circa 1911-1912 and a small quantity were delivered sometime thereafter (this one is dated 1913); Mexico defaulted on the order and the remainder of the guns were subsequently sold to Russia circa 1914-1916. This gun appears to have an arsenal re-blue, more like parkerizing but I cannot say for certain (see images). I bought it at an estate auction and it reportedly came out of Mexico a long time ago. It is also reported to have belonged to a General Rafael Vargas of the Mexican Army. I cannot confirm this, but stamped into the stock is the lettering, "GRAL. R.V." (I acquired it at the same auction with a German Kar.88 Mauser Carbine, dated 1892, with the stock stamped in the same fashion); there are no export markings on either that I can find. Mexican crest is on the receiver although obscure (see images). Safety knob is period but not the original (although correct for this gun); cleaning rod is missing. Appears to be the original dust-cover. Good stock, good action, good overall condition. Fair bore but rifling is all but gone.
Used gun. Curio & Relic and must be shipped to a Federal Firearms Licensee, C&R or standard license; not sold as a shooter; no warranty implied or given. Please have any gun you intend to shoot - in any fashion - checked by a competent gunsmith.
